PhD and Postdoc Breakfast Club: Imposter Syndrome - Is it real?

Imposter syndrome probably affects most of us, and can seriously affect our mental health, confidence, and happiness. This talk by Hugo de Boer aims to analyse and relativise imposter syndrome, as well as provide insights to mitigate its effects.

Do you have difficulty accepting compliments/praises or feel unworthy of your accomplishments?

Do you feel like your achievements so far are just based on luck and not actual merit?

Do you feel like there is just so much more that you could have done for your project/work?

Do you feel that you are hiding behind a facade and maybe discovered as a fraud?

Do you feel like perhaps you are just not the best person for the job and that they should have chosen someone else?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions, you may have impostor syndrome.

Hugo de Boer is a professor and research director at the Natural History Museum, UiO. As a former PhD student, a supervisor and research leader, he is concerned by the effects of imposter syndrome – and tries to find ways to avoid its negative impacts.
